Dry Needling

According to the APTA, dry needling is a “skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin into specific trigger points which elicit a local ‘twitching’ response.” In other words, it’s a way to help relieve pain and tension in specific areas of the body. When you get a muscle twitch, it’s actually your body’s way of trying to heal itself. The immune system kicks in to begin repairing the damage, and increased blood flow helps to reduce inflammation and pain. The twitch can also help to stimulate trigger points, muscles, and
connective tissues, which can improve movement and reduce pain.

Benefits

Pre & Post

Precaution

At our clinic, we have seen firsthand how effective trigger point dry needling can be in reducing muscle tension and improving range of motion. This form of physical therapy can also help improve dysfunctions of motor-end plates and nerve impulses.

Trigger point dry needling can benefit a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Chronic or long-term pain
  • Muscular strains
  • Migrain
  • Ligament sprains
  • Neck pain
  • Cervical issues
  • Muscle spasms
  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica nerve pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • frozen shoulder
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Athletic stiffness or strain
  • Hip and gluteal pain
  • Knee pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Headaches and migraines

Pre

  • Do not eat anything 2 hours prior to treatment.
  • Hydrate yourself up to (and even during) the session.
  • A good nutritious meal about 3 hours before treatment.

Post

  • After dry needling therapy, your muscles may feel sensitive or ache. However, this is generally a good sign that the therapy has done its job!
  • You may experience some pain, swelling, and tenderness in the treated area. This is normal and should last for a few hours to two days.
  • There are a few things you can do to alleviate pain: try an ice pack, drink lots of water, and drink coconut water. These methods should help you feel better soon.
  • Stretching the affected muscle for 3×30 seconds at home can help progress to a strengthening programme.

Rest, No Drinking & Smoking.
To allow your body to heal properly, it is important to avoid any strenuous activity for 24 hours after sustaining insertional damage. This includes activities like jogging, going to the gym, playing tennis, and any other normal sporting activity. Giving your body the time it needs to rest and heal will help ensure that you can return to your usual activity level as soon as possible.

His dry needling and cupping therapy were extremely effective and I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking treatment for similar issues.
