Slipped Disc

A condition in which the intervertebral disc rutures and moves out of its alignment. The wear and tear in the spine can cause damage in soft muscle tissue which can lead to excess pressure on bones and disc. This causes the disc to move from its alignment and cause disc herniation (commonly called a slipped disc) It causes pain and difficulty handling day-to-day activities.

Treatment

In order to get the right treatment in a timely manner, these are the symptoms to watch out for:

  • Sudden and shooting pain: You may also experience that the pain in the upper back radiates to the arms and the pain in the lower back radiates to the pelvis and legs.
  • The pain lasts for hours to several weeks at a stretch
  • You cannot sit or stand for a long period of time. In fact, sitting or standing for a long time only increases the pain. When you change your body position, you notice that the pain reduces.
  • Frequent and painful muscle spasms.

The most common cause of slipped disc is aging. Over time, the hard encasement of the vertebrae becomes brittle, and the gel inside slips through the cracks. However, there are other lifestyle-related causes like:

  • Strain and Occupational Stress: People in more physically demanding jobs are prone to a slipped disc.
  • Obesity and genetic factors: The excess weight in the body puts prolonged pressure on the back-bone, leading to a slipped disc.
  • Accidents and Injuries: Unexpected physical damage from accidents can crack the vertebrae.
  • Gender: Studies have shown that men are more prone to slipped discs than women.

Most slipped-disc cases can be treated non-surgically, with the aid of physiotherapy. Please seek treatment if symptoms persist over time.

I have been visiting the clinic for the past two years and my experience has been great. Dr. Kant is very knowledgeable and he treats his patients with full dedication and patience. I underwent treatment for my neck and back pain and I got relief after just a few sessions of dry needling. So, I would recommend everyone to visit KALP HEALTH CARE for any kind of physiotherapy treatment.

At the age of 53, a back problem is scary when a doctor tells you that you need 10 days of bed rest or surgery! I went to Kalp expecting the usual steps of physiotherapy, but I couldn't even stand up straight or get out of bed without shooting pain. This is an example of not judging a book by its cover. Dr. Kant is a simple man but a magician when it comes to his treatment. He is passionate and positive about his treatment and knows the human body like the back of his hand. A dedicated team with Dr. Monika and Dr. Rakesh got me on my feet in just 3 days. This is the best treatment I could have asked for!

Frequently Asked Questions

The spine is made up of bony vertebrae that are separated and cushions by small discs. Over time, these discs could bulge. Eventually, one might rupture. The most common culprit is between L3 and L4 or between L4 and L5. This can lead to shooting pains that travel down the legs as the vertebrae are now on top of each other and could compress a nerve.

The cause of herniated or bulging discs varies from patient to patient. Discs wear out with time and use. Repetitive motions, lifting and twisting can damage discs, as can injuries, bone spurs and degenerative conditions. Bulging and herniated discs cause pain and disability anywhere along your spine.

In some cases, surgery may be required to repair herniated discs that cause total disability. In many other instances, physical therapy and chiropractic care reduces pain and dysfunction without the need for risky surgery or dangerous drugs.

Innervated by nerves spreading outward from the spinal cord, your legs may feel painful if a herniated disc irritates the sciatic nerve, a large nerve formed by a bundle of nerve roots meeting at the bottom of your spine. Since branches of the sciatic nerve extend down the back of your legs, into your ankles and feet, you can have a herniated disc and shooting pains in the legs.

Men between 30 and 55 are more likely to suffer a herniated disc due to improperly lifting heavy items, being overweight, engaging in repetitive activities that put excessive stress on the spine, smoking and not getting enough exercise. There is some research indicating herniated discs may have a genetic component associated with congenital spinal and/or disc abnormalities.
