Cupping

Cupping therapy is a type of alternative medicine that uses suction to draw the skin into a cup. This creates a vacuum that can help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, and overall well being. Cupping therapy is usually done for five to fifteen minutes.

Benefits

Pre & Post therapy

Effects on Skin

  • As skin temperature rises, metabolism in the skin tissue improves. This leads to better functioning of sweat and sebaceous glands.
  • This helps the body to get rid of extra water and salt, and also to secrete sebaceous matter more quickly.
  • This helps keep your skin looking renewed and increases its resistance to various harmful conditions.

Effect on Muscles

  • This technique stimulates the expansion of blood vessels in the muscle, which in turn increases blood flow and facilitates the flow of lymph. As a result, this can help reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Release of spasm
  • Pain gate mechanism

Effect on Nervous system

  • Stimulates sensory nerves of the skin
  • Affects ANS

Effect on Joints

  • Increase blood flow to the joint
  • Increase the secretion of synovial fluids
  • Effect on Blood
  • Increase in blood circulation – rise in low blood pressure
  • Influences the composition of blood: RBC and WBC, pH

Pre

  • Do not eat anything 2 hours prior to treatment.
  • Make sure to hydrate yourself before and during the session.
  • It’s important to have a good, nutritious meal about 3 hours before treatment. This way, you’ll be able to finish eating and have more time for your body to process the food.

Post

In order to ensure a speedy recovery, we recommend the following:

Dont’s

  • For the next 24 hours, avoid eating red meat or dairy products.
  • It’s important to take care of yourself and avoid undue stress, both physical and emotional. For the next 24 hours, try to take it easy and give yourself a break.
  • We don’t think you should be working out at the gym or climbing mountains.
  • Engaging in intercourse.
  • If possible, try to avoid solid food intake for at least 3 hours. This will give your body time to properly digest and absorb the nutrients it needs.
  • After cupping, it’s important to avoid showering or bathing for 12 hours. This helps the body to maximize the benefits of the cupping therapy.
  • It’s important to take a break from sexual activity every once in a while.

For at least 2 hours post-treatment

Do’s

  • Your body needs rest in order to function properly.
  • When your body is working hard to heal, you need to give it the nourishment it needs to help it along. Eating a good, nutritious meal is one of the best things you can do to give your body a boost in the healing process.
  • Adding a spoonful of delicious local honey to a glass of warm (never boiling!) water can help improve your health in several ways.
  • Fibre food like a few fruits.
  • Applying an antiseptic cream to the incisions helps them heal quickly and efficiently.
  • Honey has long been known for its antiseptic properties. Additionally, honey can help to speed up the healing process for injuries to the skin.
  • Cupping is an ancient practice that can be very beneficial, but it’s important to remember to drink lots of fluids afterwards. This helps your body to restore balance
    and ensures you are well-nourished.

After cupping, you may notice some of the following signs:

  • Redness of the skin (erythema) which disappears after a few weeks.
  • You may experience some slight itching at the cupping sites as your body heals. It’s normal and should go away within a few days. Try not to scratch, as it can hinder then healing process.
  • Scars are a natural part of the healing process, and usually they’re nothing to worry about.
  • There is a general consensus amongst practitioners that the darker the cupping mark, the more chronic the stasis.
  • Blisters can form on patients who have sensitive skin, or if the cups were retained for too long.
  • Small blisters will usually go away on their own within a few days.
  • Severe blisters can be extremely painful. If you find yourself with a severe blister, you’ll want to drain the fluid using a sterile needle. Once you’ve drained the fluid, be sure to cover the blister with sterile gauze to prevent infection.

I had been dealing with chronic neck pain for 6 years before I decided to visit Dr. K.K. Kant. I'm so glad I did because he not only cured me within 15 days, but he was also an amazing doctor and human being throughout the entire process. His dry needling and cupping therapy were extremely effective and I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking treatment for similar issues.
